Tha Lab

The Lab is an initiative with engaging programmes that take the artist’s studio beyond the residency to be among the community where the artist and the participants collaborate, inspire and learn from each other.

July – Puvamin Indee

“Photographic Memory Survey Project Paradise Island”

Puvamin Indee’s workshops are part of his AiR project Photographic Memory Survey Project Paradise Island.

He conducted three image transfer workshops. Each workshop was held in one of the three selected communities in Koh Samui. They are a village shop in Na Muang (Bang Kao), a temple Wat Sawang Arom in Chaweng and Nathon Historical- Samui in Nathon. A total of seventeen local individuals across generations participated. Materials like photos and interviews gathered from the workshops are integrated into the documentary Memories of Paradise Island.

Participants of each workshops contributed photos of their choice and worked together with Puvamin to create a photo collage work. Some of them had their old photos scanned and reprinted and mounted as sovenir in order to preserve their memory. The collage artworks are ” Memories from People in Na Muang”, “Memories from People in Chaweng” and “Memories from People in Nathon”

Materials gathered from Puvamin’s workshops are an important source for his documentary Memories on the Paradise Island  but also encapsulated the ethos of The Lab programme: fostering community engagement through collaborative art-making. His thoughtful approach extended beyond artistic outcomes, creating moments of shared reflection and connection.

Puvamin Ineed

July – Hou Lam Tsui
Khụ̄n Khārāxokea

The artist and the curator developed the project concept entirely from scratch on the island, collaboratively structuring and executing the project. However, what set this year apart with Hou Lam Tsui was that the community participants were not preselected by me prior to the residency. Instead, we met them serendipitously during a karaoke party at the beach hosted by Dr. Rames.

With the help of Puvamin, we organized a karaoke night at the residence, inviting the same group of beach karaoke participants along with their friends. Hou Lam filmed the event, turning it into an MTV-style video titled Khụ̄n Khārāxokea. During the potluck gathering, thirteen community members performed songs of personal and cultural significance. The resulting footage captures collective singing, often mismatched with the music playing, and body movements during dancing—sometimes filmed in slow motion. These subtle moments reveal the distance between the artist and her subjects, emphasizing her role as a close yet detached spectator, quietly observing in proximity the interplay of connection and cultural expressions.

Ground View Project November 2024

The Lab invited two international schools ISS and PBISS to collabrate with Li Weiyi to produce her artworks in two seperate workshops. The artist and the curator worked closely to formulate the artwork concept and workshop activities. The results are Ground View 1 and Ground View 2 of the Ground View Project.

Ground View project is inspired by animism beliefs. In Ground View 1 and 2 participants worked in a pair to 3D scan each other’s hands placed on the rock and their feet on sand bead respectively. The scans would be submitted to the artist who would then using 3D modeling to construct them into the final artwork. The participants are connected with the nature and created memories together through the workshops. The final artworks reveal a imagined perspective which the nature quietly being part of our activities.
